Roscoe Curtis “R.C.” Talbert, Jr.
Services to honor the life of Roscoe Curtis “R.C.” Talbert, Jr. will be 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 14, 2015 in the Chapel of the Garden at Rice Funeral Service. He will be laid to rest at Woodlawn Cemetery. R.C. passed away on Sunday, October 4, 2015. He was 87.
Born in Sapulpa on December 11, 1927 to Roscoe Curtis Talbert, Sr. and Alma Florence (Smith) Talbert, R.C. was the youngest of seven children. He was reared and educated in Claremore where he graduated from Claremore High School. A child of the great depression years, R.C. learned the value of hard work early on and took his first job as a water boy very seriously. Throughout his lifetime, R.C. always worked hard and had a variety of occupations including independent truck driver, rail freight relief agent, aircraft construction at McDonnell-Douglas and carpenter.
On March 2, 1946 R.C. chose to serve his nation and enlisted in the United States Navy where he was stationed in Guam and North Island, San Diego, California until his honorable discharge in 1948.
In 1951 R.C. married the love of his life, Phyllis Ann Curtis and their union was blessed with two sons, Ted and Carl. As a loving and devoted husband and father, he always took care of his family and provided for them to the best of his ability. The family moved to Tulsa in 1963 and R.C. worked as a foreman for his brother-in-law, Charles Curtis, in the Curtis Construction Company. After Charles’ passing R.C. went into business for himself. He formed Talbert Construction Company, using his skills as a master carpenter and cabinet maker to construct many churches, schools and office buildings throughout Tulsa and the surrounding cities.
Upon his retirement in 1987, R.C. enjoyed traveling and playing golf with his good friends. All growing up through the depression the entire foursome appreciated the value of the dollar and they knew every golf course with the fairest green fees. That is where they most often enjoyed their regular outings. And although he had always hoped to move to a small acreage, he found great joy in the friendships he and Phyllis shared with good neighbors.
This loving husband, father and brother will be deeply missed by all whose lives he touched. R.C. is survived by his wife of 64 years, Phyllis Talbert; children Ted Talbert and wife Sandy; and sister Ruth Beard. R.C. was preceded in death by his parents, son Carl, brother Clyde and sisters Geraldine, Dorothy, Vedah, and Joy.
