New Claremore Restaurant: Here’s What Ashley Thinks

I like Chinese food. Actually, I like all food. Except salad. And liver. And a lot of other things. But I really like Chinese.

My husband and I lived in Tulsa for a few years, and we were ecstatic to find a delicious Chinese joint in the neighborhood that DELIVERED. Ah, bliss. Then we moved to the Owasso area. The restaurant nearest our house, eh. There was a place across town that was fine, but it was ACROSS TOWN. Then we found a great hole-in-the-wall in downtown Collinsville that was our go-to.

This past summer, we moved back to Claremore. And not to dis on any particular establishments, but we haven’t found any in town that we love. I prefer one, he prefers another, and we never agree. So we have been suffering in silence about the lack of quality sesame chicken in our lives.

And then. And then, New Star Chinese Restaurant opened in town.

It’s awesome.

We went on opening day, a few days before Christmas, for a work lunch. Being that the restaurant is located in a former gas station, I didn’t have high hopes for the decor. The windows are tinted nearly black, so it’s impossible to see lies beyond the unassuming glass doors.

It’s lovely. Lots of black and brick, very simple.

Between the four of us at lunch that first day, we had sesame chicken (of course), chicken fried rice (a plate bigger than your head), Mongolian beef (the most tender, flavorful beef strips around), and egg foo young (which I had never seen before but was served with a fantastic mystery sauce). We split an order of crab rangoon, which was amazing. I had egg drop soup, and one of my companions had chicken and rice soup. I’d never seen that before, either, but it made me think that if I am sick in bed, I want someone to bring me a bowl of that.

The service was friendly and reasonably speedy. I picked up a call-in order on Christmas Day (that’s right, folks, they were open on Christmas!), and have had lunch there again, and it was consistent. I tried the chicken lo mein this past visit, and it was delicious.

If you’re looking to try some good Chinese food and support a new local business, give New Star a try. They are located at 1005-A E. Will Rogers Blvd., in the old Kum & Go/Red’s location. Open 7 days a week! Monday – Thursday 11a – 9:30p, Friday and Saturday 11a – 10p, and Sunday noon – 9:30p. Dine in and take-out are available. For call-in orders, dial 918-923-6868.

Happy eating, Claremore!

  1. Ashley–a good article and review, but the ad for Rogers County’s Only Crematorium about halfway through kinda made me wonder about the aftermath of eating at your new best place!!!

  2. It’s seriously good!! I had the cashew chicken and it was very tasty and the Rangoon is nice and sweet, just the way I like it. Next up, orange chicken! Can’t wait.

  3. The problem I have with the Chinese food restaurants here in town is they all use MSG and I can’t eat that–it seriously makes me sick. Do you know if this new place also uses MSG? I only know one place in Owasso that doesn’t, but that involves a 22 mile round trip 😥. I’d rather support Claremore establishments, if I can eat there, that is
