CASA Of Northeast Oklahoma Celebrates 30 Years Of Service!

What do all four of these ladies have in common besides wanting to help change children’s lives for the better?  They are all on the staff of CASA of Northeast Oklahoma and all started out as a CASA volunteer.  Photo (left to right):  Lana Kite, new Recruitment and Training Coordinator; Lori VanNoy, Advocate Coordinator for Craig and Washington County; Susan Moody, Advocate Coordinator for Delaware and Ottawa County and Shawnee Tribal Court; Sandra Rains, Assistant Director (celebrating her 20th Anniversary with CASA).

“Lana is our newest addition to our staff and now allows us to have someone be able to concentrate full time on recruiting and training volunteers in meeting the ever-increasing number of children needing an advocate,” said Emily Bowling, Executive Director, CASA of Northeast Oklahoma.  “These ladies, along with our other staff members, volunteers, board members and supporters, allow us to be there to help change children’s lives for the better.  I am so proud to be able to work with such dedicated people, with the goal that all children deserve a safe, permanent and nurturing home where they can be happy and thrive.”

CASA of Northeast Oklahoma provides advocacy services to abused and neglected children living in foster care. Their service area encompasses six counites (Craig, Delaware, Mayes, Ottawa, Rogers, Washington) covering over 3,800 square miles.  They have six (part-time and full-time) staff members and 65 volunteers.

Local Artist Hosts Book Signing Saturday Downtown Claremore at The Same Page

Local Claremore artist Gerry Mooney will be having a book-signing and linoleum printing demonstration for his new illustrated edition of Charles Dickens’s epic novel BLEAK HOUSE on Saturday, May 3 at 2PM, at The Same Page bookstore, 514 W. Will Rogers Blvd., Claremore.

Mooney spent five years creating forty new linoprint illustrations for BLEAK HOUSE, considered by many to be Dickens’s greatest novel. It tells the story of an interminable court case, Jarndyce v. Jarndyce, and the way whole generations are swept up and destroyed by a heartless court system, the Court of Chancery.

The artist will do a reading from the book and will do a live demonstration of the linoleum printing process, a block-printing method that involves carving an image into a block of linoleum, then rolling ink onto it and pressing a sheet of paper upon it to create a series of copies. As a completely hand-made medium, no two prints are exactly alike.

A full set of original linoleum prints for the book will be on display, and copies of the book will be available for purchase.

New Event Kicks Off Rodeo Month in Claremore!

The 1st Annual Clem McSpadden Cowboy Trade Day and Ranch Horse Show, is an exciting new event coming to the Will Rogers Stampede Arena Grounds, is set to take place on May 3, 2025 from 8:00am-6:00pm. This event is the kick off for rodeo month here in Claremore starting festivities that lead up to the Will Rogers Stampede Rodeo which is held May 23-35, 2025. The goal of this event is to bring together all facets of people from spectators to shoppers to cowboys and ranchers and even the kids. Attendees can look forward to over 70 vendors to shop from, a Ranch Horse Show, Live Entertainment and many other things that are planned through the day. There will also be a concession stand on site with different home cooked items in which proceeds will go to aid Crosslyn Mooney, a bright and shining 11 year old cowgirl from Welch, OK, in her fight with a rare brain cancer.

“Events like this bring us back to our community roots and western heritage by sharing in the different aspects of the day” says Hannah Mendell and Jenny Bailey, the event organizers. “It has been such a pleasure working with the Will Rogers Stampede Heritage Association to be able to organize and bring this event back to life” they also say.

It is with pleasure that we are able to bring this event to the public free of charge, meaning free entry and free parking. This event has had enough attention that we have been able to secure Hampton Inn as the host hotel for this years show as well as have had vendors asking and planning for a multi-day show in 2026.

April Is National Child Abuse Prevention Month

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month – established in 1983, is a time when caring people go the extra mile to raise awareness of the terrible toll that abuse, and neglect take on young lives and to remind our community that everyone can play a role in preventing such harm.

When children who have been abused or neglected grow up without a strong support system, without the focused help they need to heal, and without the guidance of those who know how to advocate for their every need, it’s not only their own lives that are shattered.  Research shows that they will be much more likely to abuse their own kids one day, and so the cycle continues.

CASA of Northeast Oklahoma is a nonprofit organization who trains volunteers to advocate for abused and neglected children in the court system in northeast Oklahoma.  Their mission is to advance the welfare of northeast Oklahoma children through best interest child advocacy and family strengthening efforts that are individualized and culturally sensitive.  They promote and support quality volunteer representation for children to provide each child with a safe, permanent and nurturing home.

CASA of Northeast Oklahoma is breaking that cycle by ensuring that abused and neglected children in foster care have the chance to recover and to find a permanent loving home, whether that be returning home safely to their family or adopted into a forever home.  With a trained and supported CASA volunteer by their side – in court, in the child welfare system and in life – foster children get a real opportunity to grow up strong, stable and successful.

“CASA volunteers help children navigate the foster care system.  They bridge the gap between the courthouse and community, helping judges understand the specific support each child needs,” said Emily Bowling, Executive Director, CASA of Northeast Oklahoma.

During this special month of awareness, CASA of Northeast Oklahoma holds their annual Paper Doll Project “Battle of the Counties” in the six counties (Craig, Delaware, Mayes, Ottawa, Rogers, Washington) in northeast Oklahoma where they provide services to children living in foster care.  Businesses, organizations, churches and individuals agree to sponsor wooden dolls (size 3T-4T), name, dress and display them in their businesses or visible locations as a reminder that there are children living in foster care in each community.  All clothing stays in the county where it is collected and distributed to foster children.  The county raising the most money during the month receives the traveling trophy to display for the following year.

“During April and throughout the year, CASA of Northeast Oklahoma asks everyone to please consider making an investment in the lives of children living in foster care.  Become a CASA volunteer, make a tax-deductible gift to CASA of Northeast Oklahoma, mentor a child in school, or simply offer an encouraging word to a child who is struggling.  The point is to get involved – make a difference.  Helping change a child’s story today will go a long way to helping children break the cycle of abuse and neglect forever,” said Bowling.

About CASA of Northeast Oklahoma: Incorporated in May 1995, CASA (then Tri-County CASA) was formed serving Craig, Mayes, and Rogers County.  It is now a regional program serving six counties (Craig, Delaware, Mayes, Ottawa, Rogers, and Washington) in northeast Oklahoma, plus the Shawnee Tribal Court.  CASA of Northeast Oklahoma, celebrating its 30 Year Anniversary, envisions a world where every abused and neglected child has a CASA volunteer appointed to represent his or her best interests, where all children have a safe, permanent, nurturing home and where they can thrive.  CASA of Northeast Oklahoma is a member of the Oklahoma CASA Association and the National CASA/GAL Association.
