The Anniversary

zipToday is the 3-year anniversary of the day we learned Zip has FOP. Fibrodyspasia Ossificans Progressiva affects muscles, joints, and connective tissue, turning them to bone. Without a cure, his body will eventually lock into a position of its choice.

The support of the FOP community and our local community has given us the strength to continue day to day. Zip endured 18 months of flare-ups when they started. His neck and spine are fused. His shoulders are pinned and his left arm is locked. The next 18 months, fortunately, were pretty quiet. He had one flare-up in his ribcage about 3 weeks ago, but we are flare-free again for the moment.

Good and Bad.

Good because there are no flare-ups.

Bad because I’m always waiting for them.

Research in FOP has advanced tremendously in the time since we’ve joined the FOP community. Clinical trials will be starting this summer and more are on the horizon.

Being diagnosed with FOP makes your family diagnosed as a fundraiser. As you know, funding for research comes mostly from families of those affected.

ZipperQ is our fundraiser of choice and this year we are hosting ZipperQ 3 on Saturday, October 4th. This year, I hope it will be bigger and better than ever. There are a few changes in store.

The first is that we’ve changed the location to the Claremore Expo. The size and parking at the new location should better accommodate the event.

zipThe second is that we’ve added a 5K to the event. It will be at 3:00 on October 4th and it will start and stop at event location. Pelco has generously offered to cover the cost of the race; therefore, all entrance fees will be donated to research! Plus, you get a super cool tennis ball yellow tshirt (Zip’s favorite color).

The third change is that the vehicle drawing will be a “Winner’s Choice” this year. The winner will get to take their pick from a 2014 Dodge 100-Year Anniversary Challenger, 2014 4-door Jeep Wrangler, or a 2014 Ram truck.

We are also going to offer an “event” t shirt that will be offered via online sales before the event. It is a gray-on-gray shirt with a ZipperQ logo on the front and sponsor listings on the back.

We are currently looking for sponsors and for auction items. Any way you can help would be appreciated.

You can see more details, register for the 5K, register a BBQ team, or buy your raffle ticket online at www.ZipperQ.com.

Thank you for putting up with my rambling and helping if you can.

SUMMIT Physical Therapy: One Step at a Time

summitWhen I was in high school, and for a few years after college, I worked for my mom in her photography studio. (Dori G., y’all.) I remember two families that regularly brought their children in for photographs: the Cox kids and the McGuire kids. It turns out that both families were great friends. So much so, that the dads, Sean and Bret, went into business together. This led to business sessions at Dori G.’s featuring matching denim shirts. Keep in mind, it was the 90s.

Sean Cox and Bret McGuire met in physical therapy school. Bret’s wife, Anissa, attended school with them. They all wanted to stay in Rogers County. At the time, Claremore Regional Hospital was the only facility in town that offered physical therapy. Solution? Open their own clinic.

SUMMIT Physical Therapy originally opened in the old movie theater at NeMar Center. By 2006, they had outgrown the space, and decided to renovate the building that used to house Mega Movies. (Denim shirts, video stores…it was definitely a few years ago!) In the meantime, they opened a pediatric clinic near Claremore High School, where Anissa McGuire was heavily involved in the daily operations. A friend mentioned to Anissa that there was not a clinic nearby that offered aquatic therapy. Solution? Open a clinic that offered a bigger in-ground pool that both the adult and pediatric clinic could utilize.

IMG_6952In 2010, SUMMIT built a state-of-the-art 10,500 square feet facility on Blue Starr. I went to the clinic recently for the first time and met with administrator Herb McSpadden and marketing whiz Delayna Trease. We met at 8:45a on a Wednesday. This place was rockin’! Due to the size of the building, it didn’t seem crowded, just bustling. And even though patients were there for treatment, everyone looked happy. SUMMIT is obviously doing plenty of things right.

I have been fortunate in that I have never required any kind of physical therapy, so I asked what exactly SUMMIT does. The answer I got was basically this: If one wanted to find another clinic that offers all of the types of therapy that SUMMIT does, it would require a  road trip of several hours. In all likelihood, Dallas is the closest city that would have a comparable clinic. All kinds of therapy are offered, including women’s health, physical therapy, occupational and speech. (SUMMIT speech therapists currently operate in 13 school districts in northeast Oklahoma.) Custom foot orthotics are offered. A certified hand specialist is on staff, who also performs wound care. SUMMIT’s therapists work with elderly patients who are dealing with arthritis, athletes who are returning to the playing field after injury, and employees who have been hurt on the job. Remember the aquatic therapy? SUMMIT has an 8 – 10 person warm water pool that allows patients who are battling arthritis or cannot bear weight on land to regain strength and mobility quicker.

summitThe pool also serves another purpose: an Aquatic Arthritis class is offered every Tuesday and Thursday, and is open to the public. Cost to attend is $5. The one-hour class is held at 10a and noon.

What began as a humble clinic in an old movie theater is now three locations: Claremore, Pryor and Catoosa. Catoosa is preparing to renovate the former Jiffy Jon’s on Route 66, allowing that location to double its current space. Pryor also offers aquatic therapy. Claremore, of course, is the largest facility, and now houses the pediatric clinic in the same building. It’s a one-stop shop, really.

Bret and Sean love Claremore, and it shows. They are both active in our community, and have been involved in numerous leadership positions. One or the other can usually be found at high school sporting events, volunteering hours to make sure none of the athletes get injured. Both are active in church, and recently took a group of students to Uganda on a mission trip. (Except Sean. He had to stay home. Bret, Anissa and Kim went instead. I hope they took lots of photos for him.)

The passion is felt among the employees, as many of the staff has been part of the SUMMIT team for years; several have been with them since the beginning. Recently, the pediatric clinic receptionist, Twyla, and therapy assistant Steve Wilkinson were honored as the  “Best in Rogers County.” The original goal of Bret McGuire and Sean Cox was to own a clinic that allows for big-city care in our small town. Mission accomplished, gentlemen.

For more information on the clinic, follow SUMMIT on Facebook. It’s quite entertaining, and features more of those classic denim shirt throwbacks! You can also find them on the web.

Keep it local, Claremore!

Kids Starting Kindergarten? Read On.

By brandy glick

Kindergarten

Preparing your child for kindergarten can create overwhelming anxiety. I know, I have done this three times now. My kids all had different reactions to that first day. My daughter wouldn’t talk…to anyone for several days. My oldest son threw himself at me, pleading I take him with me. It wasn’t pretty. And then there was number 3. Once in his classroom and seated at his desk, he leaned over and said “I think it’s ok if you go now.” You can have a huge impact on how that first day goes for your child.

So, we have compiled a list to help you, your child and the teacher make those first days of Kindergarten a little smoother for everyone:

  • Starting two to three weeks before school begins, adjust your daily routine to fit how the school day is scheduled. Have you child get up earlier, eat lunch a little later and spend some time doing fun projects or activities together that will help them get in a learning mode.
  • There are some great books out there about starting Kindergarten and reading those with your child will help them to know what to expect that first day. Some of those books are Miss Bindergarten Gets Ready for Kindergarten, Will I Have a Friend and Kindergarten Rocks.
  • Spend time helping your child learn to write their name. Do fun activities to help them learn their colors, numbers and letters. Please keep in mind that all children entering kindergarten will be on various levels of skills and knowledge. Don’t stress about where your child is.
  • If you are feeling anxious or sad about your child starting Kindergarten, try to not let on in front of your child. If your child sees you are comfortable, they will be as well.
  • If you have questions for the new teacher, and we all do, that first morning will be crazy. If you need to know general information, try writing your questions down in a note or leave a phone message and ask for a time to discuss your question.
  • School and learning are fun! Don’t sweat the small stuff! Tap into your child’s natural curiosity and excitement about learning and this school year is sure to be a Success!

Tree planted in memory of George Harrison has been killed by….Beetles!

By brandy glick

george 5

In 2004, a pine tree was planted in memory of George Harrison in Griffith Park in LA. Reports are now confirming that tree has been killed by Beetles. Even George himself would find humor in the irony of the situation. He always said he had two big breaks in life, the first was when he joined The Beatles, the second biggest was getting out.

George Harrison was famous for being the lead guitarist for The Beatles as well as being a singer, songwriter and he later launched a successful solo career. Harrison died in LA in November of 2001 from lung cancer. A new tree will be planted in the upcoming months.

Why is kale everywhere these days?

kaleEvery food has its season, right? Summer is the perfect time for fresh produce stands filled with peaches, tomatoes and corn straight off the cob. Take a quick stroll through the produce section of your local grocery store (or even down the chips aisle) and you’ll notice kale has found a prominent spot. The thick lush green is showing up on restaurant menus as the new “it” food. So why is kale all of the sudden so popular? Well if everyone (or every food) gets their 15 minutes of fame – this is kale’s time in the spotlight and it’s taking full advantage of a culture always in search of the next hip thing to eat.

Kale is Popular for Good Reason

We all know if you want to improve your diet then you need to add more fruits and vegetables to your diet. If you really want to swing for the fences, then picking from the “Superfood” list is the way to go. Kale is certainly no stranger to this list and some even tout it as number one. Here’s why. With only 33 calories per serving, kale provides 206 percent of your daily vitamin A, 134 percent vitamin C and 2 grams of protein. It contains plant compounds, which protect against breast, cervical and colon cancers and has been listed among vegetables with the highest Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC).

Is Kale the New Spinach?

Remember when spinach stole the health headlines? By even having spinach as an ingredient, foods were naturally perceived as being healthy. Spinach and artichoke dip anyone? Just as spinach became mainstream and enjoyed in everything from enchiladas to frittatas, kale slipped in as the new green on the block. Before you knew it, Pinterest was filled with homemade kale chips recipes.

So which one is better for you? It is a question everyone from Cleveland Clinic to Huffington Post is trying to answer. If you Google “spinach versus kale” you will find more than 170,000 results – a debate dietitians surely enjoy with a culture that can more easily debate their favorite pizza spot. In cleverly illustrated infographics, Cleveland Clinic says it is a draw, while Prevention says kale wins by one point if you take into account the price. Huffington Post argues, “spinach is so over.” Everyone would agree, however, if you were debating between the two, you couldn’t go wrong.

More Than Kale Chips

When cooking with kale, the options are pretty limitless. Like spinach, you can incorporate it into a variety of dishes. It will hold up to being steamed, sautéed, baked, braised, dropped into soups or stews and even sliced thin and served raw as a salad. One of the leaders in cuisine, bon appetit magazine, offers 11 ways to cook with kale to start enjoying this superfood on the dinner table tonight. If you would rather wait until breakfast, guess what may have edged kale chips off the top spot on Pinterest? Kale smoothies!

Does kale have lasting power? Your health care provider certainly would hope so, we assume, along with the old standbys like carrots, broccoli and Brussels sprouts.
