Rogers County Literacy Council – Adult Education Classes in Claremore

The Rogers County Literacy Council (RCLC) has successfully concluded an education-themed English as a learned language (ELL) class titled “Education Conversation.” This series of ten classes led by language instructor, Stacy Lucas, was held at the Claremore Community Center. Twenty members of the community attended. This class was funded by the Oklahoma Literacy Coalition.

In addition, recently RCLC hosted a Citizenship Information Session featuring guest speaker Jesus Ramírez, Community Relations Officer, from the U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services. Mr. Ramirez provided information about the naturalization process to the participants eagerly working towards their citizenship goals.

RCLC expressed gratitude to the Claremore Community Center, and especially administrative assistant, Sue Payne, for cooperation in the realization of this project. The enthusiastic participation of the class’s two volunteers, Agustín Ramírez and Elizabeth Donegan, is also greatly appreciated. A follow up class is beginning soon! The RCLC is excited to host a Health-themed ESL class titled, “Health Conversation,” at the Community Center in Claremore. Beginning April 4, 2016, classes will be held from 6:15 pm to 8:15 pm, Monday and Wednesday evenings. These classes will give English language learners tools to communicate more effectively with health care providers , and understand health related issues in English. The goal for this project is to enhance community awareness about health and wellness will also fulfilling the literacy mission in our community. RCLC is a volunteer based adult literacy tutoring non-profit and has been serving Rogers County for over thirty years as a United Way Agency. The Council would appreciate your inquiry regarding volunteering to tutor adults in your area. Volunteers can help adults improve reading and writing skills by tutoring one- on-one, or help English language learners.   Office hours are Tuesday and Thursday at the Will Rogers Library 9:30 am to 4:30pm.
