A group of rapists and date rapists were interviewed in prison on what they look for in a potential victim. This is what they said.

The first thing they look at is hairstyle. A woman wearing a ponytail, bun, or braid is more likely to be a victim, since her hair can be easily grabbed. Women with short hair are not targeted as often.

The second thing they look at is clothing, and if it is easily removable. Rapists often carry scissors with them to cut clothing from their victim.

They also look for women using their cell phone, searching through their purse, or doing some other activity that leaves them distracted. If you’re not paying attention, you can be easily overpowered.

The number one place women are abducted from is grocery store parking lots. Next is parking lots/garages. Third is public restrooms.

If you put up any kind of a fight at all, you’re better off. It only takes a minute or two of struggling for the attacker to realize you may just not be worth the trouble.

The men interviewed said they would not go after a woman carrying an umbrella or similar object in their hands, because it can be used from a distance. Keys are no good as a weapon, because you have to get extremely close to the attacker to use them.

THINGS TO REMEMBER
If someone is following you, whether on the street, parking garage, or empty stairwell, look him in the eye and ask a direct question, like “What time is it?” Or start a conversation about the weather. Either way, if you look him in the face and would be able to pick him out of a line-up, he’s likely to move on and leave you alone.

If someone is coming toward you, hold out your hands and yell, “STOP!” or “Stay back!” Carry pepper spray, and hold it out and yell, “I have pepper spray!” These guys want easy targets, so if you show them you’re not going down without a fight, you will lose appeal as a target.

If you are grabbed around the waist from behind, pinch as hard as you can under the arm between elbow and armpit, or the upper thigh. The skin is sensitive and it hurts. Pinch HARD!

Go for the groin, always. Hard.

If he reaches out to grab you, grab his first two fingers and bend them back as hard as you can. Ouch.

The elbow is the strongest point on your body. If you can, use it.

Always stay on alert. Pay attention to your surroundings. Take someone with you if you can. If you see something odd, go with your instincts.

If a robber asks for your wallet or purse, don’t hand it to him. Toss it aside, out of his reach. He’s likely more interested in the wallet than you. So throw it away and RUN.

If someone has a gun but you’re not under his control, RUN! You lower your chances of being hit as a moving target.

If you’re ever thrown in the trunk of a car, kick out the tail lights, stick your arm through the hole, and wave like crazy. The driver won’t see you, but other motorists will.

Women have a tendency to get in their cars and do stuff like checking phones, making lists, etc. Don’t do this. Get in your car, lock the doors, and drive away. Don’t give a predator a chance to snatch you.

Stay safe, ladies!
