Claremore Museum Honored with Cherokee Gift

Cherokee Chief Bill John Baker was at the Will Rogers Memorial Museum with Doris “Coke” Meyer’s son, Jerry, when Cherokee Nation Councilor Keith Austin presented a $1,000 check to the Will Rogers Memorial Foundation to honor the memory of Mrs. Meyer.

“I am always happy to support the work of Will Rogers Memorial,” Austin said, “but I am especially pleased to help bring a lasting honor to Coke’s contributions to the legacy of Will.”

They were joined by Will Rogers Ropers-docents, Pocahontas Club members and Museum staff at the site for a metal bench with her name. A fundraiser was launched among Ropers for benches to be placed at the Claremore Museum and Will Rogers Birthplace Ranch. As word spread, others responded, adding to the success of the project, according to Martin Howard, Roper spokesman.

Mrs. Meyer, great-niece of Will Rogers, was a Roper, Cherokee and Pocahontas Club member. She died in January at the age of 97.
