Be a Volunteer Tutor in Claremore!

“Open Minds” volunteer tutor training is Saturday, January 12, 2019 at 8:30 am in the Rogers County Building located at 416 S. Brady, Claremore (across from El Azteca Restaurant). Rogers County Literacy Council hosts the training. In today’s information world, there are few abilities more important than being able to read and express your needs. Access to every necessity of life, food, shelter, work, medical care, as well as reading for knowledge and pleasure, depends upon our ability to communicate.

“One-on-one adult literacy tutoring in reading and English is the core mission of Rogers County Literacy Council.  This volunteer training class is especially important right now. The council has a waiting list of adults needing reading and English tutoring. If you have been thinking about tutoring, now is the time to sign up.” Jenny Allen, President of the RCLC board.

The council has been recruiting and training volunteers since 1985. In 2019, the Literacy Council will be offering computer classes, Citizenship classes are ongoing, English classes will be available as well as individual tutoring for reading and English. The RoCo Reader program is in six Rogers County schools. A monthly RCLC Trivia Night at J. Farley’s has been a great success and helps support the council. The next trivia night is January 7.

At this time of year we are all busy preparing to celebrate Christmas and holidays. It will not be long before January turns our thoughts to plans for 2019. RCLC is encouraging you to consider a New Year resolution.   “Tutoring is a good experience for both volunteers and learners, it is a two-way street. There is great satisfaction in helping to meet a vital need. Learning to tutor is rewarding.” says Edel Godwin, the literacy council’s Executive Director.

Tutors meet with learners weekly at a mutually agreed time.  Volunteers are asked to commit to one year of volunteering. Materials are supplied by RCLC.

The cost of training is $35.00; this fee helps covers costs and offset the cost of volunteer insurance. As you approach the holidays, you can have your New Year’s resolution in place. You can become a literacy volunteer by contacting director@rocoread.org, or visiting by the office located in the Claremore Will Rogers Library located at 1515 N. Florence. Your application must be submitted by January 8th.

The office is open Tuesdays and Thursdays, is closed Christmas week and reopens January 3. There is a mail box on the office door where you can submit your completed sign up form. Get your resolutions in gear, sign up to do good work!
