The Claremore Police Department is excited to announce the 13th Citizens Police Academy. The Citizens Police Academy is scheduled to begin on February 25, 2020. It is an 11-week program. The participants will meet one night a week for those 11 weeks. Classes will be held each Tuesday from 6:30p.m. until 9:30p.m. Applications must be completed and turned in by January 27th, 2020.
The Citizens Police Academy is a police department interactive program. It is designed to educate the public about its departmental policies and regulations, the criminal justice system, and ways to prevent crime. The program allows members of the department and members of the community to interact in a very positive and proactive setting. It is further hoped that the instruction will increase police awareness, dispel suspicion and misconception, and increase police/community rapport through this educative process.
Participants in the program will receive limited instruction on department history, recruit selection and training, departmental organization, criminal law and investigation, traffic investigation and enforcement, use of force, firearms training, patrol methods, community policing, and much more. Practical application and exercises will also be implemented on a limited basis. These exercises will promote understanding of the intricacies and intangibles of the “job”.
The department wishes to emphasize that the program is designed to educate the public about the basic fundamentals of policing. It is our goal to educate the public about why and what we do more so than in teaching how to do it. Participation in the program is not intended to encourage or certify Police action by the participants.
If you have ever observed police officers at work and thought to yourself that it looks exciting or have wondered why they performed a particular action or technique, this class is for you.
Applications can be obtained at the Claremore Police Department at the Records Window. Anyone over 21 years old is eligible to apply. Participants will be subject to a limited background check. Academy participants are then selected into the program by the Chief of Police. Once you are selected, you will be sent a letter of confirmation and a list of academy rules, regulations, and schedule.
