Girl Scouts learn valuable life skills in the Girl Scout Cookie Program like Goal Setting, Decision Making, Money Management, People Skills, and Business Ethics. This year, they learned another skill…How to help their community.
The Cookie Program had to be suspended, ending two weeks early, due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Girl Scout troops were unable to sell all of their cookies. They could return unsold cases to the Girl Scouts of Eastern Oklahoma Council, but due to stay at home orders it was unsure when that would be able to happen.
It was decided this month that troop leaders could donate cookies to the community while wearing face masks and maintaining social distancing as a way to thank those who have continued working during this crucial time. Troops from the Will Rogers Service Unit of Girl Scouts in Eastern Oklahoma donated nearly 1,000 boxes of cookies to first responders, healthcare workers, food pantries, and local businesses across Rogers County. An additional 650 boxes were donated online to Girl Scouts’ Operation Cookie Drop for military servicemen and women stationed at home and abroad and to the local chapter of Blue Star Mothers.
Besides donating cookies, troops heard that food banks were unable to keep up with the demand for food from families affected by the coronavirus. So, the girls decided to use or donate a portion of the proceeds they earned from the Cookie Program to buy food to help local food banks.
