RSU Welcomes New Women’s Basketball Assistant Coach

Rogers State women’s basketball head coach Kyle Bent announced the addition of Tysia Manuel to the coaching staff, as the Marietta, Oklahoma native joins the Hillcats as an assistant coach.

“We are thrilled to add Coach Manuel to our staff,” said Bent. “Tysia has played and coached at multiple levels of the game, which gives her a great perspective on the coaching position.”

Manuel joins the Hillcats after spending two seasons on Jason Burton’s coaching staff at Texas A&M-Commerce, where she was an assistant coach. Manuel coached the Lions during the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons, helping to guide Texas A&M-Commerce to a 42-7 record over two seasons with a pair of NCAA Tournament bids.

Tysia joined the Lions in July 2019 after beginning her career as an assistant coach on the women’s basketball staff at Butler Community College for two seasons. In her two years with the Grizzlies, Manuel helped the team to a 49-15 overall. During her final season with the Grizzlies, Manuel helped coach the team to the conference championship as well as the Region VI Championship, both program firsts. The team would go on to a Sweet Sixteen finish in the national tournament.

“She has experience in all aspects of the job; from developing social media graphics to actively recruiting potential student-athletes,” added Bent. “Her knowledge and outgoing personality make her a great addition to the program. She will be a positive impact on our program.”

Prior to her time as a coach, Butler also began her collegiate playing career at Butler Community College, where she played from 2011-13 under head coach Mike Helmer. In her two-year Grizzly career, Manuel played in 59 games, including helping the team to a 26-7 record in her sophomore season, leading the team to the Region VI semifinals.

Following her time at Butler, Manuel went on to play at Oral Roberts in nearby Tulsa, Oklahoma, where she also earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Recreation Administration. Manuel was a spot starter in her two seasons under head coach Misti Cussen. She played in 63 games in two seasons, helping ORU to a third-place finish in the Summit League in her senior year. In the postseason, the Golden Eagles advanced all the way to the WBI semifinals.

Manuel was a two-sport star at Marietta High School, where she led the basketball program under head coach Duane Shaw. She also excelled on the track, helping to lead Marietta to an OSSAA Class 3A State Track & Field Championship in 2009.

Tysia will officially join the Rogers State women’s basketball coaching staff on July 1, 2021.
