Hillcats Take Down UT Tyler In Thrilling Double Overtime Victory

No. 17 Rogers State men’s soccer (4-1-1) took down UT Tyler (2-1-1) in a thrilling 1-0 double overtime victory on Saturday.

Jordan Watson came through for the Hillcats with the golden goal to win the game. Declan Viljoen continued his excellent play in goal with five saves and his fourth shutout of the season.

The game was a defensive struggle for both teams from the opening kick. The Patriots barely outshot RSU in the opening half 4-3. All four of UTT shots were on goal with only two of the Hillcats three shots on goal. Things stood at a 0-0 tie at the intermission.

The second half was equally a defensive stalemate, only with RSU cranking up the pressure on the visitors. The Hillcats did not allow the Patriots to get a shot on goal, and only allowed them two shots total in the period. RSU with managed to fire off five shots with two on goal. However, neither team was able to find the back of the net in the first 90 minutes.

In the first overtime period, the defensive theme continued with only RSU’s Josh Milla able to get off a shot that went wide right.

The Hillcats finally began to break down the Patriots defense in the final overtime period as Grant King was the first to get a shot off, but it flew just over the crossbar. Finally, after a beautiful set of touches from D’Waylan McIntosh and Luke Morgan, Jordan Watson connected on the game winning goal in the 101st minute to give RSU the 1-0 victory.

The Hillcats will be back in action as they remain home on Thursday, Sept. 23 to open up GAC/MIAA play against Newman. Kick off is set for 6:30 p.m.
