Hillcats Take First Conference WIN!

Rogers State women’s basketball (5-11, 1-9 MIAA) took down Northeastern State (3-11, 1-7 MIAA) with a 63-56 victory for their first conference win of the season on Saturday.

Three Hillcats finished in double figures in the win. Bailey Kliewer led RSU with 13 points to go along with six rebounds, two assists and two steals. Julie Luna posted 11 points with six rebounds and an assist. Katrina Christian added 10 points with two rebounds, an assist and a steal. Jordan Lewis hauled in a team-high eight rebounds.

The first half was a back and forth affair with four lead changes and three ties. Neither team could get more than a six point advantage. However, RSU outscored the RiverHawks in both periods, outshooting them 13-10 in the first quarter and 14-11 in the second. The Hillcats held a 27-21 lead at the break.

RSU tried to build on their momentum in the second half as they pushed out to a 29-21 lead to start the third quarter. Unfortunately, NSU refused to go down as they kept fighting and briefly retook the lead at 36-33 with 5:48 left in the period. The Hillcats responded and went back up with a narrow 42-40 lead headed into the final 10 minutes.

In the fourth quarter, RSU managed to take control of the game outscoring the RiverHawks 21-16 in the period. Every time NSU tried to mount a comeback, the Hillcats had an answer and maintained a two possession lead for the majority of the period. They eventually took the 63-56 victory.

RSU will be back in action on Tuesday, Jan. 18 as they travel to Wichita, Kan. for a makeup game against Newman. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
