Hillcats Knock Off Missouri S&T With Late Goal In First Road Trip

Rogers State men’s soccer (2-0) secured their first road win of the season in a 2-1 decision with a goal in the final minute against Missouri S&T (1-1) on Sunday.

Two Hillcats scored in the win. Josh Milla notched his second goal of the year while Matthew O’Reilly scored the game winner for his first of the young season. Declan Viljoen turned in a solid performance in goal only allowing the lone Miners goal with two saves.

RSU started the game white hot as they immediately went work putting offensive pressure on the Miners. In just the second minute of the match, D’Waylan McIntosh fired in a shot that was knocked down by Missouri S&T’s keeper, but Josh Milla was there to put the ball in the back of the net off the rebound. The Miners then returned the attack, netting the equalizer in the eighth minute to tie things 1-1. The remainder of the half devolved into a defensive struggle for both teams. After the two goals, the Hillcats were only able to get off one shot with the Miners only getting off two shots.

In the second half, both teams continued their strong defensive performances. RSU stifled Missouri S&T and only allowed them three total shots in the remaining 45 minutes with only one shot on goal, compared to the seven they had in the first half. However, the Hillcats slowly began to break down the Miner defense with eight shots, with five on goal. Finally, in the 89th minute, Matthew O’Reilly broke through and gave RSU the 2-1 win with a goal.

The Hillcats will return home on Thursday, Sept. 1, as they welcome No. 22 Midwestern State to Soldier Field. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
