Rogers State softball (33-6, 12-4 MIAA) took care business in a series sweep of Newman (15-29, 3-11 MIAA) in an offensive slugfest that included eight home runs across the two games Friday.

GAME 1 – RSU 15, NU 5 (6 innings)
In the first game of the day, Callie Yellin made her presence known as she etched her name in the record books belting three home runs and logging eight RBI, both single game school records. The junior finished just a three-run homer shy of the home run cycle on the day going 4-for-4 at the plate.

However, the game got off to a bit of a rocky start as Newman took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. A RBI single to short brought in the first run with a nine-pitch, bases loaded walk scoring the other run.

The Hillcats answered with a run in the home half to cut the deficit to 2-1 as Yellin got her first hit of the day as ball dropped in no-man’s land in front of the circle to score Paxton Donaldson from third.

In the top of the third, the Jets expanded their lead with two runs to go up 4-1. A sacrifice fly to left scored the first run with a wild pitch allowing the second run to score from third.
The momentum shifted in the bottom half as RSU exploded for six runs to take their first lead at 7-4. A Nicole Price single up the middle and back-to-back free passes to Bridgett Morales and MaKayla Jackson loaded the bases with no outs. Facing a 2-1 pitch, Yellin unloaded on a ball sending it out of the park to straight away center for a grand slam, her first round-tripper of the day. Chelsea Spain later drove in Jaylan Gibson with a single to center to go up 6-4. Donaldson capped off the scoring as she drove in Marissa Smith by beating out a single back to the pitcher.
In the bottom of the fourth, Yellin struck again with a two-run blast to left center scoring Jackie Zaferes and pushing out the lead to 9-4.

Newman got a run back in the top of the fifth to trim the margin to 9-5 with another bases loaded walk.

Yellin went yard for the third time in the bottom of the sixth as she lifted another ball over the left center field wall on a 2-2 pitch, this one a solo shot. Spain later scored Gibson on a single to center. Bobbi Leitha would steal home for the third run of the frame. Facing a 2-0 pitch, Bridgett Morales walked off the game as she smashed a three-run jack of her own to seal the game at 15-5, scoring Spain and Nicole Price.

Sara Llamas-Howell (16-1) earned the win as she worked 4.1 innings, allowing five runs on six hits with a strikeout. Madison Dewit (4-10) took the loss.

GAME 2 – RSU 8, NU 3
The home run fun didn’t end in the first game as Makayla Jackson kept the party going with towering three-run moonshot over the screen in left field after Nicole Price and Bridgett Morales reached on a fielder’s choice and single up the middle to start the bottom of the first, respectively.

The Jets got a run back in the top of the second as they too caught the home run bug with a solo shot to lead off the frame.

The home run train kept on rolling in the home half of the second as both
Lana Gass and Chelsea Spain led off the inning with back-to-back solo dingers. MaKayla Jackson came back for more as she launched her second long ball of the day, this one of the two-run variety, to increase the lead to 7-1.

Newman again added a run in the top of the third to trim the margin to 7-2 with a RBI groundout to second.

The Hillcats scored one final run in the top of the fourth to go up 8-2 as Paxton Donaldson stole home with one out.

The Jets pushed across one final run in the top of the seventh with one last solo blast to right center to set the final score at 8-3.

Jade Sanders (12-2) earned the win as she worked 4.0 innings, allowing two runs on four hits with four strikeouts. Megan Walz (3-9) took the loss.
