Hats Off to Will
The Indian Women’s Pocahontas Club will host their annual “Hats Off to Will” event, Saturday at 4:30 p.m. November 5, at the Claremore Conference Center, 1400 W. Country Club Drive in Claremore (behind Walmart, next door to Holiday Inn Express).
We’re lassoing the spirit of Will Rogers by celebrating Will’s birthday, as Will was an early member of the Pocahontas Club. The Claremore Conference Center becomes the special assembling place where Will would expect all the Pocahontas members and fans to gather. If only Will could step into the room with us. Will, also known as the “Cherokee Kid”, would lick his lips in anticipation of his favorite meal, of slow-cooked beans with all the trimmings, and revel in the aroma of homemade apple pie, fresh from the oven.
Honored Family, Jesse Bartley Milam (J. B. Milam) “Principal Cherokee Chief” 1941-1949 and his wife Elizabeth “Peach” McSpadden Milam were one of the prominent founding families of Rogers County, as well as of the Pocahontas Club. Many of the Milam family are still active in the Pocahontas Club today. Will’s love and respect of family is felt today as it was years ago when he walked into the “Pocahontas Club” with tears in his eyes and spoke these words, “I have talked to kings, queens and dignitaries, but you know me.”
Haute Hat Contest, in remembrance of Will’s wife Betty. Join in or cast your ballot. Betty Blake Rogers was famous for always wearing her Haute hat.
Jana Jae, Queen of Country Fiddle, strikes the bow to the fiddle in honor of the first Pocahontas barn dance. Listen closely and you may hear Will call it, as he did years ago.
Becky Hobbs, Pocahontas member and piano-pounding honky-tonk songwriter for celebrities such as George Jones, Loretta Lynn and many others, will also entertain us. Becky is also co-writer of Alabama’s “Angels Among Us” and the playwright for “Nanyehi”, Beloved Woman of the Cherokee.
