RoCo Fit and Claremore Community Raced through the Decades at Rock the Mock

Fall 2015 Rock the Mock

On Thursday, October 29th, approximately 200 participants walked and ran a free community race at Claremore Lake. The event celebrated the finish of the fall session of RoCo Fit and invited the community. Several participants and mentors from Mayes and Washington Counties’ free fitness programs (MaCo Fit and FLOWCo) attended. Tatur Racing and Chameleon Sounds donated their time and equipment to add festivity and fun. Many volunteer RoCo Fit mentors and participants donated water, water bottles, bananas, materials, supplies and their time. Healthy Community Partnership’s Growing the Good sponsored the race and helped invite local youth from all Rogers County schools to participate. They provided t-shirts for the kids as well as medals for all participants. It was truly a fun, free family event!

A one mile and a 5k run/walk were offered to accommodate all levels of fitness. All ages walked or ran the course through Claremore Lake trail, and passed music stations along the way playing song favorites from all the decades, 50s to current. Many dressed up in their favorite decade attire and took dancing breaks at the stations. Chameleon Sounds and Tatur Racing started the race and made regular announcements of finishers coming in and played music to keep everyone excited and cheering up till the last finisher crossed the line.

RoCo Fit will continue providing free opportunities to walk and run for all fitness levels twice a year in Rogers County. MaCo Fit (Mayes Co.) and FLOWCo (Washington Co) are modeled after this program and will continue offering the same. The mentored fitness program will begin again in spring and workout for 12 weeks, take a break in the hot summer and begin another 12 weeks in the fall. Each session includes a progressive schedule to allow participants to improve their fitness and health safely and slowly. Educational clinics are offered and presented by professionals covering nutrition, form, gear, safety, injury prevention and strength/cross training. The spring and fall sessions will host free Mock 5Ks open to the public at the end of each 12 weeks. This is a healthy lifestyle program with dedicated and giving volunteer mentors.
