NTC students place second at Business Professionals of America National Competition

Several students and instructors from Northeast Technology Center traveled to Boston to compete in the Business Professionals of America (BPA) National Leadership Conference May 4-8. Two of those students – Cole Lambert and Kayla Johnson – placed second in the Video Production Competition.

“It was shocking to hear them call our names,” said Lambert. “Knowing we were up against 26 states including Alaska and Puerto Rico and we have one of the best videos in the nation feels amazing. I feel like I achieved my goal here at NTC.”

The students and their instructors arrived in Boston a couple of days before their competitions began on Friday. They stayed through the awards ceremony on Sunday, and in the downtime between competitions, they were able to take in some of the sights of Boston.

“My favorite place we visited was Harvard,” said Lambert. “We got to tour the University campus. We also participated in a whale watching cruise that was really neat.”

Aside from seeing the historic parts of Boston, the students also participated in a record-breaking attempt at Fenway Park. To celebrate the organizations 50-year anniversary, 1,500 participants donned tie-dye T-shirts to set the new Guinness World Record for largest gathering of people wearing tie-dye.

“Fenway Park was awesome,” said Johnson. “I’m really glad we had the opportunity to be a part of a fun event at such a legendary spot in Boston.”

Lambert and Johnson’s competition took place on Friday. Prior to arriving in Boston, the duo was required to submit their video entry for review by the judges. They were the first team to present to the judges on Friday morning, and they had several long days of waiting on the results.

“We were very nervous during the competition, but we persevered and finished strong,” said Johnson. “Then we got nervous again waiting for the results. They called nine other teams before us and we got scared. But when they finally announced second place, and we heard our names, we were very excited.”

In addition to Lambert and Johnson, nine other NTC students were part of the group that traveled to Boston to compete. Gavin Wallace (Claremore) Allie Murray (Pryor), Ivy Debrosse (Claremore), Kaylyn Lane (Claremore), Jae Chastain (Chouteau), Destaniee Merworth (Colcord), Madalynn Welch (Rose), Macyn Keller (Vinita), Garrett Price (Quapaw) and Jordan Knott (Sequoyah) were all part of the group of students representing NTC and the state of Oklahoma.

“I was incredibly proud of the way all our students competed and conducted themselves while we were in Boston,” said NTC Pryor instructor April Blackwell. “This group included some of our best students, and their professionalism and intelligence lend credibility to the quality training one can gain in the Oklahoma CareerTech System.”
