Safenet Raises Awareness for Domestic Violence in October

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month – Help Give Voice to Those Who Have Experienced Abuse in their Intimate Relationships

In 2020, domestic abuse reached a 20-year high. There were 27,089 abuses perpetrated by family members, current or former significant others and roommates reported to Oklahoma law enforcement agencies. The abuses including murder, sex crimes, threats, and assaults. (Source: Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation) For every 1,000 Oklahomans, 6.8 experienced abuse and advocates say that many incidents are never reported. About 80% of the reported incidents were assault and battery. Sixty-one Oklahomans were murdered by their abuser last year.

“Domestic Violence Month is important because darkness cannot survive in the light,” says Jody Reiss, the Executive Director of Safenet. “Help us shed light during the month of October. There are many ways to support Safenet and we would love to get you plugged in.”

To raise awareness and help prevent abuse, Safenet Services will host events throughout October to spotlight national Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
