The Oklahoma Department of Transportation announced two upcoming road closures Tuesday as they prepare for Phase II of the SH-20 Expansion Project.
Southaven Road will be closed starting Monday, June 19 and Country Club Road will close on Wednesday, July 5th. Both roads will be closed until the end of this year flowing into 2024.
Road closure and detour signage will be displayed throughout the construction sites.
TJ Gerlach, ODOT’S Strategic Communications Public Information Officer of Districts 1 and 8 said, “While the closures on Southaven and Country Club [Roads] will be a headache for some residents, we’re excited about what the completed project will offer to drivers on SH-20. The new capacity and turn lanes will offer a much safer route for motorists.”
The entire scope of the $68 million project consists of adding five miles of new roadway from the Verdigris River to the Will Rogers Turnpike; adding a bridge over the BNSF rail line and Route 66; adding a new intersection; improving the Route 66 and King Road intersection; adding a new bridge over the Turnpike; and adding a new Oklahoma Turnpike Authority interchange.
This new access point to the turnpike will be between the current toll booth –– about three miles –– right off SH-20 and the other interchange at SH-266. The interchange will have on and off ramps going in both directions.
Being located across the BNSF tracks, Rogers County Commissioner Chairman Ron Burrows said, “It is impressive to see how much has already been done, and exciting to see it progress every day even more.”
